J. Gary Polhill

Gary Polhill did a degree in Artificial Intelligence and a PhD in Neural Networks before spending 18 months in industry as a professional programmer. Since 1997 he has been working at the Macaulay Institute on agent-based modelling of land use and related systems. He is interested in complex systems, social dilemmas, spatially-explicit modelling, and best practice in agent-based modelling, programming and design.

Dawn Parker

Dawn Parker is Assistant Professor in the Department of Computational Social Science, Krasnow Institute of Advanced Study, George Mason University. Previously, she completed a post-doctoral fellowship in modeling at CIPEC, Indiana University, following completion of her Ph. D. in Agricultural and Resource Economics from UC Davis. Her research interests center around the dynamics of human-environment interactions that result from humans' decisions regarding allocation of scarce resources, focusing on development of multi-agent system models of land-use and land-cover change (MAS/LUCC), including methodological issues and efforts to develop this new research area into a scientifically mature field.

Daniel Brown

Dan Brown is Professor and Associate Dean for Research in the School of Natural Resources and Environment at the University of Michigan. His work, published in over 75 refereed-articles, chapters, and proceedings papers, has aimed at understanding human-environment interactions through a focus on land-use and land-cover changes, through modeling these changes, and through spatial analysis and remote sensing methods for characterizing various aspects of landscapes. Recent work has explored spatial simulation, including agent-based models, for representing spatial dynamics. He has served on the Editorial Boards for Landscape Ecology and the Journal of Land Use Science.

Volker Grimm

Volker Grimm has a diploma degree in biology and a diploma and PhD degree in physics. Since 1992 he has been a researcher at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research—UFZ, where he has been involved in developing a wide array of ecological models. His main interests are agent-based complex systems (ACS), strategies of modeling ACS (pattern-oriented modelling), stability concepts (resilience), and buffer mechanisms.
