Jim Doran

Jim Doran read mathematics and statistics at Hertford College, Oxford from 1959 to 1964, and then moved to the University of Edinburgh to join a research team in Artificial Intelligence led by the late Donald Michie, a former code-breaker with Alan Turing at Bletchley Park during WWII. Doran left Edinburgh in 1969 and after a period as a joint research fellow at the Atlas Computer Laboratory and St Catherine's College, Oxford, moved in 1973 to the Department of Computer Science at the University of Essex where he is now Emeritus Professor. His interests in artificial intelligence have focussed on heuristic search, planning, distributed artificial intelligence and multi-agent systems. After working as a volunteer on several archaeological excavations during his time as a student at Oxford, he has also published numerous papers (and a book with F. Roy Hodson) on the application of computational methods, notably non-metric multidimensional scaling, combinatorial seriation, automatic hypothesis generation, expert systems and computer simulation and agent based modelling to archaeology and to the social sciences generally. Currently his research interests are in the design of cognitive agents and in agent-based modelling of social conflict and the emergence of social complexity.
